What’s a Heat Rate System?
In a nutshell, it’s a separate meter that measures just the electricity used to heat your home or business. PRECorp offers a discounted rate on that portion of your bill from October through April, which adds up to seven months of credits each year. (These credits are one of the rare reasons you can be thankful Wyoming’s winter lasts over half of the year!)
At our house, that meant we received a $176.55 credit on the January bill alone, which isn’t bad for simply letting the utility company know which part of your power keeps you warm.
Why It’s Worth It
Yes, you’ll need an electrician to install that additional meter which will feed a second panel where you will reroute all your heat loads, but the long-term savings make it an easy investment. Once the setup is in place, you’ll automatically get the lower rate every heating season. It’s one of those rare “set it and forget it” ways to save money—no apps, no remembering to unplug anything, and no sacrifice in comfort.
