Solar Tax Credits are Going Dark

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act that President Trump signed into law on July 4, 2025, made a number of tax credits that were set to expire permanent for taxpayers. It also sunsets a number of renewable energy tax credits sooner than originally planned. If you are hoping to capture and harness Wyoming’s golden sunlight with new solar panels at your home or business and still get a tax break, you’d better get hustling.

Under the new law, homeowners can get 30% of the cost of solar installation and equipment as a tax credit until December 31, 2025.

To ensure your eligibility for the tax incentive, we highly recommend you sign a contract with a contractor, pay for, and install the project before the end of the year.

If you were planning the installation at your business, the situation is a little more confusing. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, solar projects have to either begin construction before July 5, 2026, or be placed in service by December 31, 2027. However, on July 7, 2025, President Trump issued an executive order that requires the Secretary of the Treasury to take action within 45 days to strictly enforce the termination of the investment tax credits for solar facilities, among other things.

Given the push to end solar business tax credits executively, wisdom would suggest treating the business investment tax credits for solar as if they were expiring soon too.

Even with the future uncertainty, today under existing law, Campbell County is considered an energy community and businesses (sorry homeowners) that install solar here are eligible for a tax credit adder of 10%, for a total of 40%.

Solar energy installations, especially when utilizing batteries, are a reliable technology that make energy bills more affordable and their owners more self-sufficient. When added to current tax credits, the cost savings make a persuasive argument for investing some of your money in solar while you still can.
